3rd May 2015
Greetings to the people of Heswall in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I am delighted to be able to introduce myself to you today having been invited by Bishop Keith and your Parish Representatives to serve as your new Rector. I look forward to meeting you and sharing with you in the work God is doing amongst you and the mission he has for us in the community and beyond.
My name is Martin Cannam. I am married to Sarah who is a G.P and we have two children, Ellen 9 and Tim 8. We currently live in Biddulph, Staffordshire where I have been Vicar of St. Lawrence’s Church since 2000. Prior to that I was ordained in the Liverpool Diocese and served my Curacy in Childwall having trained at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford and worked at St. Stephen’s Twickenham and St. Michael-le-Belfrey, York.
I have been following the vacancy in Heswall and church life at St. Peter’s and the Good Shepherd on your website since Jonathan Gibbs’ appointment last year with a growing sense that this Parish is where God is calling me for the next phase of my ministry. I was pleased that discernment was recognised and confirmed during the interview process last weekend.
I am therefore really excited to see what God has in store as we journey together, seeking to serve him faithfully and grow his kingdom. I believe I bring my own faith in Christ, personal gifts and experience in Christian leadership to work with the diversity of people, ages and worship traditions across the Parish and to engage with the challenges that lie ahead and the opportunities the Spirit of God leads us into in the years to come.
Outside of our work Sarah and I run the occasional 10k and Half Marathon and are great outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hillwalking, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, camping and travelling. We’ve travelled several times to East Africa so are very much looking forward to linking up with Rock of Joy in Uganda. Having also visited Nepal and trekked in the Everest region to climb Island Peak I’m sure today we are united in prayer for people in Nepal and those delivering aid to victims of the earthquake.
Sarah, Ellen, Tim and I will also be praying for you in the months before we move, as we would ask you to pray for us and the people of St. Lawrence’s, Biddulph. So far we’ve really only met your churchwardens, PCC and clergy team. They’re clearly continuing to lead and minister well during the vacancy — encourage and thank them! We look forward to getting to know you all better and welcoming you to our new home in the Rectory. Ellen and Tim are earnestly discussing colours for their new bedrooms and are desperate to rebuild the treehouse in the garden! As they finish term at the end of July we’ll be seeking to “leave well” from our current home and ministries and be with you for the start of term in September.
Grace and peace to you in Jesus’ name,
Revd. Martin Cannam
